Lukas, J. Anthony. “Busing in Boston.”
September 23, 1982
Boston Globe. In it Lukas writes, “There are two separate themes in Boston’s life which explain the difficulty most Americans have in understanding the city. . . One is the principle of community and one is equality. Community is rooted very deeply in Boston’s life. The ideal of American community had its founding in Charlestown and Boston. What Judge (J. Arthur) Garrity’s (busing) order violated was precisely that sense of community, the right to settle where you want – to send your child to school where you want. On the other hand, there is a countervailing ideal of equality that goes back to the abolition movement that had a base in Boston. There is a fundamental conflict between these ideals of community and equality.”
